We attended the USA Baseball NTIS Regional Event at The Big Show in Leesport, PA. Overall, the facility itself was well maintained, but the event organization and communication left room for improvement.
The complex was clean and the fields were in good, game-ready condition. The facility features a mix of natural grass and turf fields, so players should bring both cleats and turf shoes to be prepared for either surface. Not every field had player benches, so I would recommend bringing your own folding chairs and, if possible, a canopy or tent for shade.
Food options were limited. During our visit there was only one water ice vendor, and it wasn't open when we arrived around 10:00 AM. It did open later in the day before we left around 2:00 PM.
The snack stand had a fairly limited selection, although the prices were reasonable. One downside was the $10 minimum purchase required for credit card payments, which felt unnecessary and inconvenient.
The men's restroom unfortunately wasn't a highlight. It had a strong urine odor, there was debris in several urinals, and the overall cleanliness could have been better. To be fair, they may have been in the middle of cleaning since a floor blower was sitting near the entrance, but the restroom still wasn't particularly pleasant considering it was a relatively quiet morning. Hand drying was limited to a single air blower with no paper towels available.
There isn't a great deal for family members to do while games are going on. There is one nice picnic area on a hill with covered seating, but beyond that the complex is mostly open fields. They do have protective netting installed above many of the walkways to help prevent foul balls from reaching spectators. However, not every walkway was protected, so families should still stay aware of live play.
I left with mixed feelings about the NTIS evaluation process.
The talent level varied considerably. Some players were very impressive, while others appeared to be well below that level. During game play, the quality of competition depended heavily on who happened to be on the field or pitching. Some pitchers threw quality strikes while others struggled consistently, making evaluations feel somewhat inconsistent.
One challenge with the game portion is that some players may barely get an opportunity to showcase themselves. An infielder or outfielder might not see a single ball hit their way during the entire evaluation game. While every player does receive defensive reps at their primary position, there is no guarantee they'll actually have a chance to make a play.
Pitching Registration Confusion; One area that could be communicated much more clearly involves pitching. The registration form asks whether your player pitches, which naturally suggests they'll be evaluated as a pitcher. However, simply checking that box does not register them for the pitching evaluation. To be considered as a pitcher, the player must list pitcher as either their primary or secondary position during registration.
This was confusing because players are also given the opportunity to participate in pitching metrics on Day 1, making it easy to assume they were already registered as pitching prospects.
Scheduling and communication were probably the weakest part of the event.
Unfortunately, Day 1 did not go as planned due to weather.
The published schedule was:
9:00–9:30 AM: Gates open / Check-in
9:30–10:00 AM: Stretch and warm-ups
10:00 AM–2:00 PM: Metric testing rotations, including:
30-yard sprint
5-10-5 shuttle
Hitting exit velocity
Positional evaluations
Catcher pop times (following the completion of all groups)
Our group was originally scheduled to complete the metric testing outdoors from 10am-2PM. However, rain forced everyone inside, and the event became disorganized. Despite arriving on time, activities began earlier than the published schedule, creating confusion for families trying to follow the itinerary.
The indoor adjustments resulted in approximately 90 minutes of metrics (not 4 hours)with very little actual evaluation taking place, making much of the session feel unproductive. Weather is obviously outside the organizers' control, but there didn't appear to be a clear contingency plan to keep players moving efficiently or to communicate schedule changes effectively. A more organized rain plan and better communication would have made the experience significantly smoother for everyone involved.
Day 2 instructed everyone to check in, but upon arrival there was no actual check-in process.
The second day also ran approximately an hour behind schedule, creating unnecessary waiting and confusion. We had to ask to see if we started and when we should be starting, the people we asked said soon but then said "i think" ..Better communication and sticking closer to the published schedule would significantly improve the overall experience.
The Big Show facility itself is a solid venue with quality playing surfaces and generally good amenities, although restroom cleanliness and food options could be improved.
The NTIS experience has value, particularly for players looking to be evaluated by USA Baseball, but there are aspects of the evaluation process and event organization that could be more consistent. Clearer communication regarding pitching registration, more organized scheduling, and a more structured evaluation format would make the experience much smoother for both players and families
